“Childhood obesity may be the most important health crisis facing us today. It causes serious medical problems involving almost every organ system in the body, as well as psychological and social problems that can severely disrupt a child’s healthy growth and development. If we don’t start to address the obesity epidemic much more aggressively today, we will pay a terrible price in the physical, psychological, social and economic well-being of our families, communities, nation, and the entire world.”
- Dr. Thomas N. Robinson, MD, MPH. Director, Center for Healthy Weight, Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. Associate Professor of Pediatrics and of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine. |
Who Benefits from Marsh Madness?
Marsh Madness is an annual 10K/5K run/walk to raise awareness about the growing youth health challenges.
“Youth obesity epidemic” and “adult-onset diabetes” are becoming familiar phrases used to discuss the escalating issues surrounding youth health. The larger challenge is overcoming the fact that many American children have poor nutrition and are not getting enough physical activity. We can reverse this troubling trend through positive programming focused on wellness.
The Palo Alto Family YMCA and its programs are taking positive step towards improving nutrition, increasing physical activity, and reducing youth obesity and adult-onset diabetes. When you join Marsh Madness as a participant or sponsor you are not only battling the youth obesity epidemic, you are also fighting for our children to have better levels of fitness, improved nutrition, and an overall enhanced quality of life.
